〈Threads of Beauty〉は、高木由利子が “日常的” に民族衣装を着ている人たちを撮影したシリーズです。「顔も、表情も、服と一緒になって存在している人」を探して、12カ国、26年をかけて撮影を続けてきました。本書はこれまで撮影されてきた1000枚を超える写真のなかから、約150枚ほどに厳選し１冊にまとめるものです。
高木はこの旅を通して出会った人々に、服の原点を見出します。
「服は人にとって、Identityである財産であり、同時におしゃれは喜びである」。
彼女が旅をはじめた1998年時から現在までの間にも、グローバル化により装いの風情は失われてきました。
しかしながら、彼女の心を深くとらえた服と人の結びつき――写真に映し出されたその美しさ――は、人の営みを支える一部でもあり、しなやかな強さをもっているのです。
The project ‘Threads of Beauty’ is Yuriko Takagi’s photographic series which captures people wearing traditional clothing as part of their daily lives. Over the course of 26 years and across 12 countries, she has continued photographing individuals whose “faces, expressions, and very beings are intertwined with their clothing.” This book is a collection of approximately 150 carefully selected photos from over 1,000 photographs taken during the project.
Throughout her journey, Takagi has discovered the origin of clothing in the people she met: “For people, clothing is an asset of identity, and at the same time, fashion is a source of joy.”
Since she began her journey in 1998, the elegance of traditional attire has gradually faded due to globalization. However, the deep connection between people and their clothing that captivated her heart—the beauty captured in her photographs—remains a part of the fabric of human life, with a resilient strength.

ソール・ライター（1923～2013）は、89歳で亡くなる直前まで、毎日写真を撮り、絵を描き、膨大な数の作品を遺した。彼のインスピレーションの源はマンハッタン東10丁目の自宅アパートのわずか数ブロック内であり、ありふれた場所に美を見出す天才として、ニューヨークの街をカラーで切り取った世界観は、今日広く注目を集めている。
その一方、1960～70年代、『Harper’s Bazaar』でのファッション写真家としての活動、モノクロの景色、“親密なポートレート”のヌード、ヌード写真にペイントを施した作品などは、彼の生前に世に出ることはほとんどなかった。
本書は、ライター生誕100年を記念して、ソール・ライター財団が管理する膨大なアーカイブをもとに、未発表作品、コンタクトシート、人生をたどる写真付き年譜など、貴重資料を駆使しながら、ソール・ライターの表現の多様性と試作の源泉、その全貌に迫る決定版作品集である。
