本書では、明治10年から昭和期にかけて印刷された国内・輸出用の缶詰ラベル約550点を収載しています。魚類、肉類、甲殻類、果実や野菜から食卓に並ぶおかずまで、沢山の食材が描かれたラベルからは、当時の日本のもつ豊富な食料資源や国際競争のなかで培われていった高いデザイン力が読み取られます。
卓越したデザインの奇抜さ、新鮮さには、近代日本という時代の息吹も投影されているのでしょう。
