The 1970s was the golden age of Japan’s magazine culture. An early innovator in the magazine design of the time, the author remains highly influential in the field. Here he offers concrete examples from magazines of the period, along with commentary and layout tips arranged by category. Culture magazines, such as Popeye, An-an, Olive and Brutus (all published by Magazine House), gained enormous followings among the young people of the time. Masahiro Shintani served as art director for each of these periodicals from their first issues onward. In his pursuit of designs that would bring the printed page to life, Shintani employed an analog-style, hands-on approach through his “markup copies”, and created unique cover designs, title logos, typefaces, and layout instruction methods. At the same time, he was able to keep his finger on the pulse of the times and satisfy the needs of the reading public. In this book, Shintani presents rule-breaking approaches and creative ways of thinking about design, drawing on innumerable examples of visual materials that are at once nostalgic to those familiar with the period, and fresh to the young generation of today, for whom performing layout work on a Mac is taken for granted.
Masahiro Shintani Born in 1943. Attended Tama Art University, later worked as assistant to Seiichi Horiuchi. In 1970, participated in the founding of An-an magazine. Later worked for Popeye, from that publication’s founding in 1976 until its 80th issue. Has also served as art director for Brutus and Olive since their founding issues (1980 and 1982, respectively).
