—————

After the Second World War ended, foreign culture flooded into Japan.
Susumu Ema (1910-1973), a Japanese artist who lived in Kyoto, also produced designs for Nishijin silk fabrics. Feeling the need to infuse abundant diversity into the world of dyeing and weaving design, he collected samples of textile fabrics from around the world and reproduced the designs in the form of woodblock prints that he presented in a book, Tozai Senshokumon (East-West dyeing and weaving). This volume contains a full-color collection of approximately 300 dyeing and weaving designs from Europe, Africa, the Middle and Near East, Asia, and America that were introduced in Tozai Senshokumon.
More than half a century after Ema’s book was published, the diverse textile designs in the collection still communicate to us his desire to bring an open and far-sighted perspective to the assimilation of new culture. A Book of World Textile Designs is offered as a source book of textile designs of the post-war period and also as a reference that will inspire fresh, new creations and designs.
