This book is a reprint of Night Lights, originally published in 2000. The nature of the reprint is in my view something that highlights the very characteristics of Shintaro Sato’s work. Photography is at once a form of expression by mechanical means, and a duplication technology. This basic premise has been repeatedly pointed out throughout the history of photography. At the same time, now that photography seems to be swinging between the obvious polar opposites of art and pop, it is a premise with capacities that tend to be overlooked. I consider Sato’s works to be redefining this potential within the framework of photography today.
