While Atsuhiko Misawa is known for his constant production of richly humorous sculptures of animals, he is also a highly accomplished painter. This is Misawa’s first collection of pictures, presenting some 250 works in all. The animals we imagine sometimes become like characters or symbols in our minds, and these images often take on a reality that differs in various respects from the way they actually appear. Misawa, who has expressed an interest in this gap of perception, makes a lighthearted use of sparse lines and colors to realize indefinite yet endearing animal forms. In contrast to the powerful impressions made by the sculptural works Misawa produces using traditional woodcarving methods, one senses in these drawings the relaxed focus of his perspective on animals. Seemingly following the trajectory of this artist’s ideas on sculpture production, this collection of drawings features 400 animals in all, including cats, dogs, rabbits, frogs and geckos, as well as Misawa’s ever-popular bears.
